On Monday, 5 June, the United Nations hosts the first high-level conference to support the implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 14 (SDG14) (Ocean Conference).
The European Union will be represented by the Commissioner for Environment, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Karmenu Vella. This will be the first of its-kind conference, dedicated to the implementation of an individual SDG: It is co-hosted by Sweden and Fiji.
The three deliverables of the Conference will be a political declaration, the ‘Call for Action’, the reports of the partnership dialogues as well as voluntary commitments. The EU has participated actively in the preparatory process of this Conference and has registered 19 ambitious voluntary commitments.
These commitments testify to the fact that the EU is a strong supporter of the Agenda 2030 and is fully committed to the achievement of Goal 14. Further to and building on this, the EU will take its ambitious Oceans agenda forward, hosting the fourth #OurOcean conference in Malta, 5-6 October.
