A key measure in the EU’s fight against illegal fishing: All EU seafood imports should come from vessels with an IMO number

Author: Irene Vidal, Environmental Justice Foundation Much like a car is identified by its license plate, or a person by their ID number or passport, a fishing vessel should be easily identifiable to authorities anywhere in the world. Fishing vessels have a name and a registration number, but do those really work?

The EU IUU Fishing Coalition is composed of the Environmental Justice Foundation (EJF), Oceana, The Nature Conservancy, The Pew Charitable Trusts and WWF are working together to promote EU leadership in improving global fisheries transparency and governance to end illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing. While working closely together on a number of issues in the EU, some areas, such as work on legislation that requires lobbying, are not actively conducted by all members.
